Reading for Main Ideas

Lesson notes

Comprehension means understanding a passage, not merely reading the words aloud. The main idea is the central point the writer wants to communicate. Supporting details explain, prove or illustrate it. Read the title and opening sentences for clues, then read the whole passage carefully. After reading, summarise each paragraph in a few words. Do not confuse an interesting detail with the main idea. When answering, use evidence from the passage and follow the question’s instructions.

Practice activities

  1. What is a main idea?
  2. How can paragraph summaries help?

Suggested answers
