Lesson notes

Examination formats can change, so candidates should consult the current official syllabus and instructions. English Language assessments commonly test composition, comprehension, summary, grammar and oral English. Prepare all sections instead of relying on one strength. Practise under timed conditions, read every instruction, plan written responses and reserve time to proofread. Use past questions only with their year and source clearly identified; practise original questions as well.

Practice activities

  1. Name four broad English skills commonly assessed.
  2. Why should candidates check the current syllabus?

Suggested answers

  1. Composition, comprehension, summary, grammar/lexis and oral English
  2. Formats and requirements can change.
